倒挂金钟是一种深受人们喜爱的盆栽花卉，几乎不产生种子，常依赖扦插来繁殖。实践证明，“水浸沙插素土养根法”，在自然条件下成活率基本上可达100%。
水浸插穗保鲜倒挂金钟嫩枝剪离母体后，会很快失水萎蔫，直接插入基质容易造成，尤其是高温天气，成活率不高。如果先插入水中，既保证了采离母体后水分的供应，又可促进愈伤组织形成。插穗以5～8厘米长、带尖嫩枝较好。剪下的长枝基部用刀片削平。小枝带根掰下，去掉2片底叶，尽量多保留叶片。先将插穗全部浸入0.1%高锰酸钾溶液中泡30秒钟，再直立露出叶片，将基部浸在溶液中继续泡30分钟。然后将插穗基部浸在清水中养24～48小时再插。
沙插促根潮湿的粗河沙是较理想的基质。插前将沙淘洗干净，装入净盆中。盆口应留5厘米以上沿口，使插穗顶端在盆沿以下，处于潮湿的小环境中。插时用竹签引洞。密度以叶片互不遮盖为宜。深度为插穗长度的1／2～1／3。夏秋季每天喷水2～3次，10～15天生根。
